Back up your computer
Just to preface this story, I am not the guy who repairs your computers here at Computer Doc.
Have you ever learned a lesson the hard way? Well, I learned that backing up my important computer files was the most vital thing I wasn’t doing when I came across the black screen of death a few years ago. I had everything on there, work files, photos, music, all gone. I was freaking out. I called all the computer savvy people I know and their answers ranged from you’re screwed to you’re screwed. Then I really freaked out. All the time I spent copying my CDs to MP3s, organizing my photos, and working on my client’s projects, all lost to the ether. I was at a loss on what to do.
At work the next day I researched how to remedy the problem. Did I have a chance at recovering my files? Did I have to bite the bullet and buy a new computer? I asked our IT guy what he thought and his first question was, “Well at least all your files were backed up, right?” WRONG. I never, ever tried to back up my files, ever. He suggested I take it to a computer repair place and have them take a look at it. If it could be fixed I wouldn’t have to drop my next paycheck on a new laptop.
So I took my laptop to the repair center and after a nail biting 24 hours I got the call. My computer could be fixed after all. Hallelujah! I was so relieved. Even all my files were recoverable. I was so lucky. When I went to pick up my freshly repaired computer I also picked up my first portable hard drive. Now I back up my files regularly and it has saved my butt once so far, when I really experienced the black screen of death and had to buy a new computer.
Now that I am an experienced back up artist, I have to say that I am surprised at the amount of people I run across in my time here at Computer Doc that do not back there computer up. If I could tell anyone buying a new computer the one extra accessory they need to have it would be an external hard drive to back up their data. It is an easy step to make sure you are protected in case the worst happens to your computer.
If you are looking for more information on backing up your computer, or need an external hard drive, we here at Computer Doc have you covered. Stop by or give us a call and we’ll be glad to help you on your way to a worry free computer back-up plan.
